Doesn't Feel Like I'm Shooting People In Real Life
My sister had champagne at a wedding when she was just a kid. Mom asked her what she thought of it. Without missing a beat she proclaimed, “This tastes like feet!” I couldn’t help but ask how she knew something like that without having tasted real feet before.

A Sister’s Eulogy for Steve Jobs →
This is the most touching story I have read yet about Steve Jobs—as it should be. Even as a feminist, my whole life I’d been waiting for a man to love, who could love me. For decades, I’d thought that man would be my father. When I was 25, I met that man and he was my brother.

"Hi, It's Steve" →
Aaron Sorkin: The second-to-last call I got from Steve came the day a television series of mine was canceled. “I just want to make sure you’re not discouraged,” he said. Why would an almost stranger take even 60 seconds out of his day to make that call?

In Memory of Steve Jobs →
Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address: Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They...

Facebook's Latest Updates Have Fans and Foes →
Version 2 of the Online Case Study Generator has just been released. Sample results below: There are those who dislike the updates […] Some who love the updates […] And many users are unsure about all the changes, while some still yearn for other new features. I’d like to thank the NY Times and MacWorld for their help in beta testing the newest release. Please let me know if you spot...

Supreme Court Halts Texas Execution →
This definitely sounds like the kind of person I want as the head of the United States of America: The U.S. Supreme Court stopped Texas officials Thursday evening from executing a Houston murderer who was sentenced to die after jurors were told he posed a greater danger to public safety because he is black. The justices acted on an emergency appeal after Texas Gov. Rick Perry and state...

Google Still Won't Defend Developers From Lodsys →
Mike Schramm, TUAW: One notable exception from the companies already fighting the case: Google. Lodsys reportedly also targeted Android developers, but so far Google hasn’t stepped up in the same way that Apple has. We’ll have to see if the folks in Mountain View are willing to join the fight as well. If you want more developers on your platform—especially people big enough to...

Britain Proposes a Social-Media Ban →
Mathew Ingram, GigaOm: In the wake of the riots in London, the British government says it’s considering shutting down access to social networks — as well as Research In Motion’s BlackBerry messenger service — and is asking the companies involved to help. Prime Minister David Cameron said not only is his government considering banning individuals from social media if they are suspected of...

Dave Winer: Most of the people who voted for those Tea Party degenerates come from poor Southern rural states, and I bet the people who voted for them are either barely middle class, or former middle class, or close to being former middle class. Marco Arment: You might think your @gmail.com address will be fine indefinitely, but if I used a webmail address from the best webmail provider at the time I broke away from my university address and formed my own identity, it would have ended in @hotmail.com. And that wasn’t very long ago.

Facebook’s Ban Bot Leaves Some Developers Baffled... →
Jason Kincaid: But it’s not as if Facebook can just wave its hand and suddenly put things back the way they were. Some of these developers are having to deal with an influx of user complaints. And some devs are losing faith in the platform entirely, as they fear having their business pulled out from under them without warning. Just one more example of why you need to be extremely cautious...

Apple’s Final Cut Is Dead. Long Live Final Cut.  →
David Pogue: Didn’t Apple kill off iMovie, too, in 2008, and replace it with an all-new, less capable version that lacked dozens of important features? It took three years of upgrades before the new iMovie finally surpassed its predecessor in features and coherence. Final Cut Pro X is Apple’s way of saying, “Hey, we need real-life situations to try this new code out for us, to...

If someday my penis is on Twitter and someone sends pictures of it to everyone in the world, what should I do? Most people go through life without ever having their penis sent to everyone in the world. But if it does happen, just say that the whole thing is a “distraction.” That’s a long word which means it’s your penis but you don’t want to talk about it.
